Tom Rainey

Musician, composer, arranger, pianist, producer, educator


As a pianist and bassist, Tom has performed with a huge variety of artists in many musical styles, including Georgie Fame, John Dankworth, Lee Konitz, James Morrison, Nat Adderly, Harry Secombe, Ronnie Corbett, Max Bygraves, Petula Clark, Renée Geyer, Kamahl, Bic Runga and Hayley Westenra.

Arranger and Conductor

Tom has established himself at the forefront of New Zealand’s arrangers, working with a myriad of different artists, and many orchestras both in NZ and overseas. With nearly 200 arrangements for orchestra, and many more for smaller ensembles, his work is included on many albums, and have been performed by many major orchestras.

As a conductor, he has led many performances by the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra, and conducted large jazz ensemble and choirs.


Tom’s compositional output has mostly been in the commercial arena as a composer of TV Jingles and soundtracks for documentaries.

He has also composed a number of original compositions for Big Band and orchestra.


A huge commitment to tertiary education in both the music and creative areas has seen Tom recently retire as head of Creative Industries at Ara Institute of Canterbury, NZ after 28 years or service.

Prior that, his career has seen him help establish and lead the development of the Christchurch Jazz School, now Ara Music Arts., and heading the institution’s Performing Arts school, including NASDA.

He continues to teach at Ara Music Arts and has a research interest in the area of popular harmony.

TV and Jingles

Tom has been involved over many years in the composition and production of music and soundtracks for TV programmes, advertising jingles and documentaries.

Albums and Production

Tom has contributed to a wide range of albums as pianist, bassist, conductor, arranger, composer and producer. These range from local albums, to releases by BMG, Sony and Virgin.
